Cardinals selected in the 2018 MLB Draft

Congratulations to:

Griffin Roberts - Wake Forest Rnd 1 Comp pick 43 - St Louis Cardinals

Derek Casey - Univ of Virginia - 9th Round Chicago Cubs

Scheetz and Large continue to "show em all"

Part of what makes doing what we do great is seeing kids who believe in themselves grow into men who get others to believe in them.  Kit Scheetz is the perfect example of what #BardinalFactor means.  Overlooked and underestimated, Kit went on to be the winningest pitcher in his 4 years at Va Tech.  Undrafted and overlooked once again, Kit secured a professional contract at a free-agent tryout with the Houston Astros in June of 2017.  Since then Kit has been promoted FOUR times in the past year and is now in AA Corpus Christi.  He has accumulated a staggering 1.58 career ERA in his first 26 games striking out 99 batters in only 79 innings of work.  Professional batters are hitting an anemic .215 off him while holding down an even more impressive 1.02 WHIP in his professional career.

Well done Kit.  Keep rolling and know that all of Cardinals Nation is watching and believing and pulling for you!!!!

Follow Kit and his success HERE

Also on the Minor League tip - Cullen Large has homered in his last 3 games (raising his season total to 5 while raking .325 in the Midwest League.  The BlueJays 5th rounder in 2017 is showing the stroke that carried William & Mary over the last 3 years.

3 Cardinals in 2017 MLB Amateur Draft plus F/A sign

In the 2017 MLB Draft 3 former Virginia Cardinals were selected.  William & Mary Jr 2B Cullen Large was taken in the 5th round.  Large was an All CAA and All ECAC selection this past season and was a 3 year starter for the Tribe amassing over 225 hits in his 3 years in Williamsburg.  Wake Forest Sop RHP Griffin Roberts was selected by the Twins in the 29th Round but will likely return to the Deamon Deacons with his Junior year still ahead of him.  VMI Jr Catcher Peyton Maddox was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 33rd Round after emerging as one of the premier college catchers in the region after 3 strong seasons for the Keydets. Cardinals 2021's take USSSA Va State Championship!!

Oct 16, 2016
With a flare for the dramatic the Va Cardinals 2021's mounted 3 comback victories on Championship Sunday including 2 walkoff efforts en route to their 2016 USSSA Open State Championship.  The boys were down to 9 players on Sunday due to some illness and family obligations but a tight 9 was plenty.  To top it all off the boys stuck to their guns and continued to play their fall with -3 bbcor bats (organizational mandate for all rising High School tryout candidates) while all the opponents elected to dig in with their -5.  Very proud of the boys efforts and resolve.  Congratulations to Coach Arrowood and all the 2021's for an amazzing effort.

Large comes up BIG for Tribe in CAA Championship / Leonard walks em off in OVC

Both Cullen Large (So W&M) and Reid Leonard (Fr Morehead St) continued their torrid springs into conference championship play.  Cullen large stepped up in the 12th inning of the CAA Championship game and parked one well beyond the fence in Right Center Field to lift the Tribe over UNCW and force the "if" game for all the marbles.  Overall in the tournament Large hit .348.  Leonard dug in for MSU in the bottom of the 12th and delivered his own heroics with a laser down the Left Field line that walked off Tennessee Tech and lifted the Eagles to the Semi-Finals.  View Large's blast HERE.  View Leonards rope HERE (at the 1:40 mark)
The post season success is no surprise to their squads as both players were also named to their respective All-Conference teams.  Large finished the regular season batting .328 with 76 Hits including 6 HR and 43 RBI. Large also flashed superior defense for the Tribe fielding at a .976 clip in 285 chances.  Leonard started 53 of the Eagles 59 games on the season and finished with a .347 batting average with 12 Doubles on his way to All-OVC honors.  Well done gentlemen!!

Numerous Cardinals Alumni have great springs for their NCAA Programs

Now that we are more than half way through the College season it's time to check in on campus to acknowledge the positive impact many of our alumni are having on their respective college teams:  Reid Leonard (Fr Morehead State) has locked down the starting SS job and is 2nd on the team with a .347 Ave.  In Williamsburg, Cullen Large has started every game again this season again after being the starting 2B as a Frosh for the Tribe.  Cullen is batting .341 and leads the team with 39 RBI and 60 base hits and is 2nd with 6 HR on the season.  Out in Blacksburg Va Tech is fighting through a tough season but one bright spot is the consistent performances of Kit Scheetz.  Sheetz (Jr LHP) leads the Hokies with 72 IP and 5 Wins (3 more than any other pitcher on the Hokie staff) and is 2nd in ERA with a 3.61 and 2nd on the team with 48 K's.  Scheetz also has the Hokies only Complete Game of the season - a 3-2 win over Duke -  Jr OF Mac Caples added his 2nd HR on the season in the effort vs Duke.  Across town at Radford - Shane Johnsonbaugh (Sr OF) leads the Highlanders in HR (5) and RBI and is 2nd in Runs scored while former Cardinals and current Highlander teammate Danile Bridgeman (Sr RHP) leads the team in Saves.  Mack Krupp has contributed out of the Highlander bullpen after redshirting last season - the Jr has a .080 batting ave against.  In DII action - AJ Stead (Fr LHP) is in the starting rotation and is 4-1 with 41 K in 49 IP for the Shepard University Rams.  DIII CNU has climbed to #20 in the National Polls and are being bouyed by strong performancesfrom Jr OF AJ Nicely (.300 Ave, 5 HR, 11 SB),  So SS Keith Roberts (.357 Ave, 5 HR, 28 RBI) and Jr C Collin Lawless (.365 Ave, 9 2B).

Cardinal 2016's take their final bow.

The Virginia Cardinals made the most out of their first Jupiter bid.  8 players were named to the All-Tournament team and the squad managed to leave Florida as one of only 2 teams to navigate the week without suffering a defeat.  The Cardinals 3-0-1 record was good enough to tie for their pool #1seed however the runs allowed tiebreaker left the Cardinals as the only undefeated team to not have the opportunity to advance to the playoff round of 16. All in all it was an amazing 2 year run for the core of this group.
